Business case

The usage of external consultants has resulted in internal staff members leaving the bank in search of new opportunities at other institutions.

Our vision – the ultimate goal

Provide the world's best skill & learning management system.

The solution

Bounce™ is a flexible software solution that allows users to find a new job, project & knowledge share opportunities within the bank

The challenge

Design a world-class user interface that justifies the brilliant need for internal mobility within the bank. Bounce™ should be extremely intuitive to use. Users should not need heavy training or a user manual in order to make use of the system — if they do then we would have failed. Usability is a top priority. We aimed to be the best in the enterprise market when it comes to usability and user experience design of internal mobility solutions.

From the get go we set the bar high with the vision of providing the world's best skills & learning management system.

My role

I was engaged with the project as a user experience designer at Absa CIB from Feb 2016, long before the name change to Bounce™, Since then I became the lead designer on the Bounce™ project working alongside a great team in Sandton & Cape town. I've been privileged to work with some of the brightest minds in the industry. Together we've developed the product from a prototypes with useful features, through continuous improvement and efficient delivery.

I have designed and presented my work in front of executives, senior stakeholders, subject matter experts in Human Resource management, and all members of the team throughout the project lifecycle.

Design methodology

We used Africa Design Office’s proven design methodology — Rapid Design & Visualization. This is an agile methodology for prototyping new business applications. It helps IT projects to succeed by putting the focus on the end result rather than the process. This is achieved by doing very early simulations of that end result.

The design process

We have adopted the core model as part of how we work. In brief, it is about designing from the inside out, focusing on the main tasks that users will perform. We put a lot of time and effort in identifying actual needs. All design decisions are seen in the context of business objectives and user tasks.

Whiteboarding session

Empathy with the users and the ability to understand the actual needs is essential to the success of the design. The whole team has on several occasions visited various departments within the bank and experienced how workers relate to current work processes.
We are also privileged to retrieve inexhaustible amounts of knowledge from subject matter experts in internal mobility.

Design prototype → Useful product

In the initial phase there was a need to develop and refine style guides and a common visual language. This was a challenging task, but the effort paid off eventually. A good visual framework combined with a solid front-end boilerplate, has enabled us to convert low-fidelity sketches into high-fidelity prototypes quickly and efficiently.

Bounce™ - Share & Learn through internal Mobility.

We used Bootstrap (LESS) and AngularJS for high-fidelity prototyping. This is effective as long as we have made a good groundwork with low-fidelity sketches ahead. We use Git for version tracking and deployment, which enable us to push prototypes to a separate design branch. This enabled us to test and validate the design against business objectives and user tasks

After validating the various bits and pieces of the system, each feature was merged separately into a develop branch. This has proven to be an effective delivery model from prototype design to software engineering.

Product launch

A pilot release of Bounce™ was launched last July. The pilot was successfully deployed and tested at selected Bounce™ customers.

The official launch of Bounce™ is still yet to be released but I will never get to see it all because I left Barclays Africa Group in October 2016.

The Africa Design Office team consisted of the brilliant Reatile Tshikalange, Nozi Nindie and myself Karabo Ngoatle. Shiran Moodely from Absa CIB was the product owner.
